Moyna Chitrakar

Bio

Born in village Nirbhaypur, in West Bengal in 1976 Moyna learned the art of Pattachitra from her aunt and began painting at the age of 5. Although she is formally educated in school until the fifth standard Moyna has made her life a success story through her art. Moyna has learned several songs from her forefathers and these oral narratives based around the scroll paintings have been transferring generation to generation for centuries.

Moyna has built her life around her art; woven into her art is her personal experience of the world around her. She proudly shares that her art has supported her through her life, from buying a home, raising and educating her children to getting them married. Moyna has exhibited her work in Kolkata, Chennai, Punjab, Haryana, Kashmir and all corners of the country. Her works have traveled abroad to Dubai, London, France, America and Italy. Yet the artist has the humble foreboding that one day she and her works will diminish and all that remains is the act of creating. This is what gives Moyna joy, her singing, and her creation of art.

Moyna Chitrakar creates her own natural dyes for her works. Moyna has added to the treasure trove of her family narrative songs with her own compositions to which her husband writes the lyrics.
